How Professional Athletes Use Treadmills

By Carey Baird

Footballers and professionals need to keep in tip top physical condition for the rigours of their sports. This means a mix of training inside and out, and using a mix of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. Without combining the three correctly, peak fitness cannot be achieved. Strength training does - as the name suggests - work and develop muscles - so footballers will do specific exercises to build up all over body strength and focus on the muscles that are used most during the game, including abs, hamstrings, calves and glutes.

Stretching excercises keep muscles long and lean and prevent injury. Good cooling down and stretching routines also prevent lactic acid from pooling in the muscles after exercise.

Cardiovascular exercise is the core of any workout routine as it works out the heart, making exercises progressively fitter and able to work harder - and it also strips excess fat away from the body when combined with a good diet.

It's an excellent calorie burner, and one of the best ways to work out your cardiovascular system is through running. Jogging and running works the heart very well, burning off around 100 calories plus per mile. It's hard to find another type of cardio exercise which burns as many calories and works the body so effectively, apart from cross country skiing perhaps! - which is why it's a favourite amongst footballers and professionals.

It's also a very efficient form of exercise - running can be done within an hour, and several miles can easily be covered, making it a great choice for working out hard quickly. At the same time, it will strengthen leg and glute muscles and work core abdominal muscles. It will also raise the metabolism for several hour's afterwards, meaning that the body will continue to burn fat at a faster rate.

Running on treadmills rather than outside suits footballers and professionals for several reasons. Firstly it avoids the hassle of running in bad weather and alongside polluted roads. Secondly treadmill running is softer on legs and joints, which is great for building up fitness. Thirdly the inclines on treadmills can be adjusted, as though running on a mix of hills and flat surfaces, which makes treadmills very reactive. Furthermore, treadmills will also measure distance, calorie burn and very often heartrate during exercise.

A good treadmill, such as those offered by V-Fit Treadmills, can also provide a smart addition to the home andd provide easy access to regular training routines. Te great thing about having a treadmill at home is that you no longer need to head out to the gym to work out and yo can combine some exercise at the drop of a hat with listening to your favourite music, watching some television and then jumping immediately into the shower right afterwards.
